About Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse
Initially launched by Microgaming as The Phantom of the Opera before it was recalled and later redesigned (to avoid confusion with NetEnt’s identically titled slot), Universal Monsters: The Phantom’s Curse is no doubt part of Microgaming’s plan to make a series of Universal-themed slots based on their monster franchise. Unlike NetEnt’s slot, which is based on the film of the same name, this one is more traditional, based on the opera itself. The Phantom’s Curse is played over 40 lines and those 40 lines cannot be adjusted. Not to worry, though, because Microgaming only charges 0.20 per spin for a minimum stake. Maximum stakes, however, are capped at 200.00 a game, which is considerably more than most players will be prepared to wager. Top prizes are decent, capped at 200x your total bet in all.
Special Features
Players will note that the Phantom’s mask is a wild symbol. It can substitute for any other icons in the game, save for other bonus symbols.
If the Phantom (unmasked) appears on the first reel, and a stacked wild symbol appears on the fifth reel during a base game spin, players will trigger a re-spin feature. In this bonus, bonus icons, Phantom symbols and wilds will remain sticky and act as wild symbols, boosting your chances to land a pretty respectable win.
There is also a click and win bonus in this game. Landing unmasked Phantom icons on the first reel and Christine icons (stacked) on the fifth reel will trigger a two-tier click and win bonus. In this feature, players can select roses to win cash prizes, after which they can select mirrors to bag a multiplier which is then added to those winnings.
Bonus Feature
When players land 3 of the chandelier scatter icons on the first, third and fifth reels of the slot, they will start a free spins bonus round. Players will initially begin with an unlimited number of spins. The reels in the game are connected to the chandelier, and when a masked Phantom shows up on a reel, he will cut the cord attached the reel to the chandelier. The reel then becomes highlighted. Once all the reels are highlighted, the free spin bonus comes to an end. During the feature, the masked Phantom symbol acts as a secondary wild symbol and can appear stacked when it does show up on already highlighted reels.
