Kitsune Studios is preparing to return to the setting of its first slot release with The Library Overdue, a direct follow-up to The Library from 2025. The UK-based developer has scheduled the sequel for August 19, 2026, with distribution through Hacksaw Gaming’s OpenRGS network.
The new release revisits the library theme from Kitsune’s debut while shifting the setting toward horror. The previously quiet environment has become a haunted space populated by cursed books, living shadows and twisted authors. Kitsune has retained the Stackways™ system at the center of the game and added a new Stackways™ Booster symbol specifically for the sequel.
The Library Overdue uses a 5x4 grid with Win Ways. The game carries a stated RTP range of 92% to 96%, while Kitsune rates the title as very high volatility. Its maximum win reaches 10,000x the player’s bet. Bonus-buy and FeatureSpins™ options are also available in jurisdictions where those features are permitted.
Stackways™ symbols can fill an entire reel with paying symbols when they activate. Individual stacks can contain between two and ten symbols, depending on the value displayed by the Stackways™ symbol.
Kitsune divides them into normal and revealing variants. Normal Stackways™ symbols can carry values of two, three or four. Revealing Stackways™ symbols range from five through ten.
When the feature activates, the game selects the stacked symbol according to the available combination that would produce the longest win. If several symbols can create winning combinations of equal length, the game randomly chooses between the qualifying options. A stack only forms when the resulting arrangement creates a winning combination.
During the bonus features, each reel can reach a maximum of 20 Stackways™. The newly introduced Stackways™ Booster raises the minimum Stackways™ level on an individual reel by as much as ten additional positions. The Booster appears exclusively during the two free-spin features, Stack the Shelves Spins and Overdue Spins.
The way those increases behave depends on which bonus is active. During Stack the Shelves Spins, a Special Symbol expansion resets the minimum Stackways™ value to its original guaranteed level and removes increases previously collected from Booster symbols. Overdue Spins keeps those increases in place when Special Symbols expand.
Players can enter Stack the Shelves Spins by landing three Scatter symbols. The trigger awards ten free spins. Two randomly chosen Special Symbols can expand into winning stacks during the round, while regular Stackways™ and Stackways™ Booster symbols can increase reel heights toward the 20-Stackways™ limit.
The feature also allows additional spins. Two Scatters add extra free spins, while three can extend the round further. Landing four Scatters during Stack the Shelves Spins upgrades the feature to Overdue Spins and awards four additional spins.
Overdue Spins can also activate directly from the base game when four FS Scatter symbols land simultaneously. That route starts the feature with ten free spins.
Its underlying gameplay follows the Stack the Shelves Spins system, although the accumulated minimum Stackways™ increases remain active after Special Symbol expansions. During Overdue Spins, two FS Scatters award two additional spins, while three FS Scatters provide four more. Both bonus formats give players access to the game’s maximum potential win of 10,000x the bet.
The Library Overdue comes as Kitsune Studios approaches its second anniversary. The developer started with The Library and has since expanded into a multi-game studio while becoming a flagship partner on Hacksaw Gaming’s OpenRGS platform. Its titles now reach regulated markets internationally through that distribution arrangement.
The new game will support more than 20 languages and over 80 currencies at launch.
Phillip Douglas, CEO & Founder at Kitsune Studios, said: “The Library is where this studio started, so coming back to it two years on means a massive deal to us.”
“We wanted The Library Overdue to be a true showcase of just how much we’ve grown. It’s darker, bigger and more ambitious, but still unmistakably Kitsune. It’s both a love letter to the players who were there at the beginning, and a statement of where we’re heading next.”
The August 19 release will therefore return Kitsune to the concept behind its first game while extending the Stackways™ format with a mechanic designed specifically for the sequel. The Library Overdue will become available through the OpenRGS network following its announced launch.
